MAYFLOWER BAND INSTRUMENTS -
THE NAME ON EVERYONE'S LIPS
In recent years, since the demise of the Boosey & Hawkes Company who set the template for world-wide manufacturing of student musical instruments, huge quantities of sub-standard instruments have flooded into the UK. These have generally been bought in by commodity brokers wanting to make a quick profit by buying and selling cheap instruments in cardboard boxes. These 'get rich quick' people (commonly known in the Musical Industry trade as 'Box-Shifters') invariably have no knowledge of music, or indeed - any interest in the products. Even worse, they have little interest in the purchasers who unwittingly buy their products.
Although it is a good thing that instruments are now lower priced than say, 15 years ago (thus making them more readily available for students) the quality of much of the product being sold through the internet (or in some supermarket outlets) leaves much to be desired. Whilst the internet can be a great source for people who have good product knowledge, many instruments are bought by 'First Time Buyers' i.e. parents who need a student instrument for their young children. We are saddened at some of the instruments which are subsequently brought into Maestro's for expert repair, indeed some are sadly beyond economic repair.
Discussing this problem with many friends and colleagues, all experienced instrumental teachers, we all felt that the basic structure of the instruments from the Far East is generally satisfactory. However the refinement and finish quality is often very poor. We all agreed that what is needed in a student instrument is durability, good intonation and ease of playing, but the most important criteria is that the instrument, particularly in this current economic climate, should be guaranteed and good value-for-money. The Mayflower Band Instruments excel on all these points.
We carefully researched a Musical Instrument manufacturer in China and had lengthy discussions regarding our determination to produce a good and affordable student instrument. We wanted our instruments built to higher specifications which we could guarantee but also sell at an affordable, value-for-money price. The Chinese company were more than willing to make the design alterations we requested. These include stronger springs in the woodwind, better pads and mouthpieces plus good high quality instrument cases etc. Eventually the samples arrived, we carefully examined them and we also invited many instrumental teachers to appraise them. We were all delighted with the results and so - the exciting Mayflower Band Instrument range was born!
At present the range includes 2 Flute and 3 Clarinet models, 4 different Alto Saxophones, 2 Sopranos and 1 Tenor Saxophone plus a Trumpet, a Cornet and 5 Trombones. The prices are very reasonable with the the basic Flute and Clarinet both at just £125 and the Alto Saxophone starting at £249. (See additional website pages for details)
There are plans to extend the range to include designer Trumpets, a Piccolo. a Baritone Saxophone and also String instruments. We are currently working with the factory to develop a complete range of 11 different Trombones.
Every instrument is thoroughly checked before sale. We are confident that if you purchase one of the Mayflower Band Instruments, you will be delighted with a quality musical instrument at less cost than a hand-held computer game!
A selection of the Mayflower range is also available AT NO EXTRA COST on our our 'RENT-to-BUY scheme for school children - (see relevant website page for further details)
